So I keep coming back to this forum. Over and over again for all sorts of questions, so, finally, I have decided to make an account. :) I am only really interested in my silkie babies though, lol. I have one black silkie (Chewy), one partridge silkie (Honey), a barred rock x silkie rooster named Semore, and what I assume to be a lavender d'uccle named Nugget. I had a sweet little paint silkie with two toes on one foot named Ash, but something got into the pen a week ago and took my little one from me. :( The coop is now even more fortified. Anyway, I can't wait to start posting. My first thing will be to try and see if anyone knows the gender of my silkies lol and give an educated guess. :)

Silkies are hard to determine until they are grown. Pullets and cockerels look similar. Sorry to hear your loss..

.. Do you know the predator ???

Silkies are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age, and sometimes not till they lay or crow. Any time you buy young chicks, you run the risk of having cockerels.

You might visit the "Silkie thread," and see what they have to say them.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Silkies are very popular and there are a lot of posts about them here on BYC. I don't have any but have also heard they are hard to sex and sometimes you don't know for sure until they either lay or crow. How old are your birds? If they are around 4-5 months old, it may be possible to tell with pictures of each bird.

I'm sorry you lost one of your birds, that's always upsetting. Glad to hear you fortified their coop.

Nice to have you join us!

Hello again, If you post details and pics of the coop/run under that forum, you can get suggestions to try to ensure future losses.

Thank you guys! Im not at hone right now, but I added more chicken wire at the bottim, and I am going to buy more builders wire stuff (if anyone has any idea what I am talking about) that is thicker and stronger and shuldn't rust and get weak. I let the dog stay outside mote now to protect them. I will post pics when I get home though. :)

And I got my chickens at 1 and 2 weeks old in April 12 of this year.

Aaand... i dont know the predator, unfortunatly. It was black and white though (the white was in the middle), so maybe a racoon or skunk or something?
