5 years ago we bought 6 hens which are a cross between Marans and Barnevelders. We got them for our 14yr old son to help him cope with life, sadly not long after we got the hens our lovely boy left us but his hens kept us focused. We still have 2 of the original hens, Esca because she always finds the gap in the enclosure, and Robina as she has a red breast!!

We now have 2 buff Orpingtons and 2 lacewing Wyandottes to add to our brood. I'm also looking at adding 2 light Sussex, hopefully due to hatch in April.

We are very lucky that we don't have any predators so our hens can roam around the garden during the winter months. Both husband and eldest son complain if I let them out in the summer, too much organic matter left on the lawn and the decking!! They do have a large enclosure though with access to lawn and shrubs to scratch under.

We also have 2 cats who are more nervous of the hens then the hens are of the cats. When the hens are out they will come tapping at the cat flap once they know I'm up to get there mornings handful of corn. The cats aren't too happy by this visit as they wont go out until it's all clear..

so that's me and my girls in a nutshell or should that be eggshell??

Thanks everybody for the welcome and acknowledging our loss. I will always remember J-P letting the hens out of their pen to let them run around in the garden because he didn't like them locked up and sitting with them hand feeding them corn. This was our introduction to owning our own hens and all I can say is thanks J-P. they have brought me much joy and lifted my spirits on many an occasion. :-) J-P died 3 months later but I am still looking after 2 of his original 6 :-) 5 yrs on. Even when the other 4 died over the years I am not sad because I know he's looking after them know. They are also the reason I have joined the forum. It's one of J-Ps girls that's not well so I needed advice she even ended u p spending last night in my bathroom as that's the only room that's heated all day and night... So after 19 yrs of giving birth to my 2nd child I now find myself now being kept up by one of his hens!!!
