Oh my goodness... thank you for pointing me at the articles. I'll be up into the wee hours looking at the coop ideas, and so much more. Wow! Bonanza!!

It gets too hot here and never too cold.Hi Kiki - thank you for the info. I obviously have much to learn... would you mind explaining the logic behind this, or is there an article on that? There are so many coop designs out there. I want to make sure I get it right first time. I'm not too worried about the aesthetic of it. I do need to keep it simple. I have a circular saw and a drill...![]()
Congrats Lynda and welcome! I'm new to BYC and in Houston too! I TOTALLY feel your pain in the extra effort and dedication to save your business. We just opened a CBD shop the 1st week of March :-/ so it has been interesting but not devastating....grateful so far... and hopeful that things will only get better. Good luck to you. Let's stay in touch.Hello,
This looks like a great resource, and I'm very much looking forward to learning more about raising and caring for chickens.
Here's my template schpiel:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes. Brand new. Always wanted chickens, but my ex would not allow it. So, now I'm separated (not because of the chickens, lol), in my own place, growing my garden and ready for some fresh eggs. I have done a LOT of research already and decided to probably go with pullets if I can find the breed I want. Mainly so I can get up and running with eggs quickly, and I now have to spend time trying to save my business (I'm an archery range owner and coach), due to COVID-19. My interest was way before this crisis, but it seems everyone is jumping on board. If it leads more people to self-sufficiency - as long as they get educated - that's great!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None. Will probably get 3-4?
(3) What breeds do you have?
Would like to get Plymouth Barred Rocks.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Not having done it yet, I am sure there will be experiences that I could not anticipate. However, I am looking forward to building my coop (I just built my first raised bed). I enjoy researching the correct ways to do things, to be able to better anticipate what's ahead, and potentially avoiding any pitfalls.
I see the actual experience of raising chickens as being very rewarding - especially when I am able to provide eggs for friends and family, too. I look forward to "connecting" with the chickens and getting to know their personalities. I love to teach (I'm a coach), and hope to be able to one day help others be more self-sufficient, too.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Jeeping. motorcycling. archery, bowhunting, drawing, growing stuff, listening to and playing music...
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am separated, living in my cute little house in Houston. My 21 yo son is at A&M, Corpus Christi, studying classical music (plays jazz mostly), but home with me during this COVID mess. No pets. I own an archery range and Academy and am a USA Archery Coach and Coach Trainer.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC from a link in a news article. I can't find the source again, but it was about how so many people are turning to raise chickens because of the uncertainty with the COVID-19 crisis. I joined because I could tell it is a well-run forum.
Looking forward to learning. Thanks for having me!
