I'm new here and I'm in the research stage of getting backyard chickens. I'd like to tell you what my neighborhood deed restriction says about chickens and get some advice.

"No horses, cows, hogs, poultry or livestock of and kind (other than house pets of reasonable size and number) may be kept on any lot."

My hens will be my pets so I feel like I can get around this outdated deed restriction! Some people keep their dogs outside. The pet statement is very vague.

It would be better is you truly had house pet chickens. Many folks do. The bantam breeds are especially good for indoors. Please check out "people with house chickens," thread. Banties can pass as exotic cage birds., especially silkies. If you have a regular chicken coop and run, there is always some neighbor who feels they have to turn you in.

Quick question... should there be a nesting box for each chicken in a coop? I am reading that the pre-fab coops from China are crap but are there any that are good?

There does not have to be a nest box for each individual bird as they all won't lay at the same time. It all depends how many you are going to be keeping.
As for prefab coops they can be on the flimsy side and may need some up grades and some tinkering to make them better.
