My family grew chickens while I was growing up (mostly Rhode Island Reds and a few 'Araucanas'). My wife and I recently decided we wanted a small poultry farm, so we now have eight Golden Sex-linked and four 'Ameraucanas' from Cal Ranch. This summer we are taking part in an internship at a farm that does, among other things, pastured eggs and poultry. We hope to grow our operation to profitability by next year.
We are most interested in rare and heritage breeds of meat, egg, and dual-purpose chickens, particularly those that lay unique colors of eggs (and are cold-hardy; this is south-eastern Idaho!). We would like to expand to include turkeys, geese, and more exotic birds like peacock and quail.
Here's the chicken coop we spent the spring building. I admit it's a bit overkill, but it's sturdy and beautiful and I'm proud of it.
