(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I just placed my first ever order for chicks from My Pet Chicken that should ship in April.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We don't have any chickens yet, but we’ve got 12 chicks on the way!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Assuming there won't be any substitutions, our flock will consist of 4 Easter Eggers and 1 each of the Black Jersey Giant, Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucana, Blue Splash Marans, Cream Legbar, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, & Welsummer.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Farm fresh eggs from happy, healthy hens is our primary focus. When I first started researching chickens I had no idea they had so much personality! Now I'm really looking forward to hanging out in the backyard watching the shenanigans.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We love being outdoors with our animals and are looking forward to adding to our new farm.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a family of 4 with 2 young teenagers, 4 dogs, and a cat. Our household runs on sarcasm, humor, and coffee. We knew we wanted some acreage for a farm and put a 5-year plan together, but only 2 years in we came across the perfect property for us and were able to move in last month (December 2018). A whole 3 years ahead of schedule! Now we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first chicks (April 2019) and preparing to adopt two Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Who knows, we may even decide to bring in a few turkeys for Thanksgiving! Our goal is to find a way for our farm to not only create a sustainable lifestyle for our family, but also provide enough income for us to leave the corporate world behind and return to our roots.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have been following various topics on BYC for almost 3 years now. Several of the homesteading blogs I follow reference BYC in a number of their articles, so naturally I had to check it out for myself. Talk about a wealth of information! I love how involved the community is when helping to answer questions or even just providing support for one another.
