Hello fellow Chickeners!
My name is Joanna and I've had a small flock of laying hens for about a year now. We started out with 4 hens and a rooster. We are down to 3 hens. My handsome rooster ended up in the soup pot and we lost a hen to a dog vs. chicken situation. This is my first flock and I have to say I am hooked for life.
I've lived on a dairy my whole life and have raised tons of calves, and I am a passionate horsewomen. But I have never dabbled with chickens. They are the easiest farm animal i've cared for and I find so much joy in them. But this is my rookie flock so I still have a lot to learn.
Since chicken is the only meat I have to buy at the store, I've decided to try a couple meat chickens this summer. I've decided on cornish crosses.

My question is: Does it matter between rooster or hen, meat wise, since they are harvested young?

Usually the mean birds taste the best!

You might want to do some reading in our learning center and Meat bird section here on BYC for lots of tips on raising, keeping your flock and processing tips if you need them...

Hi and welcome from SE Idaho!

For the meat breeds it does not really matter on the sex, as you noted, they are harvested much before sex type matters.

On a dual purpose bird it takes much longer to get a larger bird to harvest for meat. Haven't ever eaten a young hen of those....to valuable for the eggs. They young roos are tasty though.

Right now in the incubator I have some Bresse eggs. Very excited to try those out!
