Hi! I live in the western suburbs of Chicago. I board one horse nearby, have 1dog, 2 cats, and 4 new chicks! I LOVE this website and have been on quite a bit, thought it was finally time to join. I have 1 speckled Sussex (Rainie)and 1 welsummer (Marcie) both are pullets, and I couldn't resist taking 2 more when the Kindergarden class hatched chicks (Lady Maude and Gertie). So I have 2 that I hope and pray are hens! They are all about 4.5 week old and growing so fast!

Welcome to BYC! I have had both Speckled Sussex and Welsummers. I love the friendly personality of the Sussex and the dark eggs of the Welsummer. Good luck with your flock.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You can post pictures of the chicks in the What Breed/Gender forum for help with figuring out what they are www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this the chick on the right in the pic with the two and the chick on top in the individual pics both have a lot of pink comb/wattle for 4.5 week olds and look like potential cockerels.

Glad you joined us! I'm afraid I agree with Kelsie.. that chick looks like a little cockerel, but post pics in the Breed/gender section for more opinions.

Sorry but, I agree they look like cockerels as well. 4 1/2 weeks is early for red combs & the start of wattles. Plus in your first picture the legs on the bird (right side) are thick and male-ish.
