Our adventures with chickens started with our daughter asking to get some. We went sure if it was just a phase or if she was serious. We told her she need to do some research about chickens: best kinds for kids, their housing needs, etc. We said if she was still interested a year later, we could talk about it. The rest is history!.
We started with 8. We moved last summer to a place with a few acres and a wider variety of predators...so we are currently at 7. We have 3 Buff Ophingtons and 4 Rhode Island Reds. The best thing about our chickens are the eggs, followed closely by watching them run down hills!
When I’m not overseeing the Golden Girls, which is our nickname for them, I enjoy all varieties of crafting: knitting, crocheting, sewing, and scrapbooking. I also enjoy cooking and reading.
I am married to a great guy-Greg; mom to my wonderful daughter, Josie; and mom to our fur kids: Roscoe(black lab), Shiloh(Akita/Lab mix), Abby (Lab/Husky mix) and our two Guinea pigs, Micah and Skippy.
I’m get to spend my days as a special education teacher in a great school system. I have been doing that for 17 years and I love it!
I found out about BYC in search for information over the last couple of years on Google. One of our girls was attcked recently and I needed info on how to care for her. BYC by far had some of the best info. Figured might as well become a member as I see having chickens being an ongoing adventure for the future.

Congrats on your move out to the country! Glad to hear your daughter's interest in chickens has infected you as well. Now that you have more space I think I see some chicken math happening in your future! I hope you're able to find help for your injured hen. Best wishes!
