That area used to be used for my dogs, well part of it anyway. Since then we have fenced in our back yard for them. Had 2 great danes, a pit bull and a small mutt. Both danes have since gone to the rainbow bridge.
Mia the mutt and Oriana the bull have a huge place to play. And they already love the chicks. Daily giving them kisses. The chicks are in my bedroom atm, door closed so no visits unless I am there. We've also raised hand fed litters of kittens, and introduced them to the same dogs the same way. Our cats and dogs sleep curled up to each other. So we are truly hoping they have no problems with the chicks when they are older.
We actually thought about making a pallet coup, until we remembered the shed. Mostly just some plywood and 2x4'x need replacing, oh and shingles. Just need to wait a bit for the weather to get nice for a cpl days.
Where in Indiana are you? We are in the South Bend area. I actually don't have enough property to have hens. Living in the county I need 5 acres just to have a chicken. Or a bee hive. Crazy times. But the city just passed that residents can have chickens. Just as long as the coop is 20' from either property line. My closest neighbor is 1/4 mile down the road. But if I get caught, lol, my plans are to give them to our local Unity Gardens chapter. They have several gardens (50+) through out the city to help feed who ever needs it. They are raising a new barn just for chickens. So if all else fails, they get 9 chickens.
But I am truly hoping no one notices lol. The side of the yard is blocked by a huge tree, so it should just look like the side of a shed. The chickens will have the rest of the area to run.

We live in Indianapolis, just south of Speedway to be exact. I was born and raised in South Bend, and have a sister named Deb. Cool! Nice about the shed, that should be easy to convert to a coop. My dad sent me an article from the South Bend Tribune about the recent passage to allow backyard chickens.
