Sarah, thanks for that info. I'm just south of Indianapolis, down the road from Center Grove High School, in Johnson County. I've no idea what, if any, regulations for chickens are around here, but I've a neighbor who has a lot of them, including crowing roosters. I now have three 16-week-old hens and one rooster.

Hi! I'm new to the forum and also live in Indy. I'm thinking of getting into having a few backyard chickens, primarily for the eggs. I did know chickens are legal in the city, so what does it mean to fly under the radar? If I get chickens, do I have to register them? Does anyone know if there are regulations about keeping chickens in the city? I don't want to run into any trouble...

thanks for any info and good to know there are some chickens in town!

Game fowl, while requiring knowledge on how to deal with them being game, are still wonderful chickens! They're just a different kind of temperament in my opinion. It's not that they're evil or wrong, they just need to be handled differently. I am excited to get a pair of Shamo next year (hoping) as I hear that they have wonderful personalities and I already ADORE the Saipans that I have

They're definitely NOT your average chicken

And I think we need more people who genuinely love the breeds and promote them in great and wonderful ways

They're not for everyone, much like a power breed dog, they require the right people to have, care for and promote them in a good way

Ok I talked to the Marion County board of health and animal control, both stated that they do not have a statute of having fowl within city limits, however, if the fowl were to disrupt the city noise ordinances (after 11:00pm and before 6:00am) then there could be a fine of up to $75.00. Other than that there is not a law prohibiting fowl in metro Indianapolis.

So Schultz, how is your flock doing? The SoCal Schultz flock are doing great. The Delightful Dozen are laying 5 - 9 eggs a day as the days have shortened. Now I just need enough people who want eggs....LOL.
Sell some, give some. If it pays part or all of the bedding and layer feed, I will be happy!

Does the County Board have any suggestions on keeping roosters from crowing until AFTER 6:00 AM?

Aseels are really cool birds, but as guitarist said, they can be a handful according to everything Iʻve read.
