I have been helping to care for a large flock of free range chickens for the past two years. That is how I grew to love chickens.
The first year was with an aging flock of Rhode Island Reds and I took home the last 6 hens when a new flock of 200 were brought to the farm.
 
Thank you. I am glad to find this group. I have a lot to say about chickens but for now I just need support. The last one of the old red hens is living her last days. Her best friend and protector left us about three weeks ago. She was a Easter Egger called Blu, she looked after the old Red Hen and always wrapped a wing around old Red when going to sleep. I think a fox got her when I was out of town. I am heart broken for the old Red Hen. She has a younger red hen (Freda ) who trys to see about her.

:frow Hi Joyce, welcome to our coop! It was very sweet of you to take in those old hens. So now you are down to just two? What's your next move? Are you planning to get some new girls? I wonder if you will stick to more RIR's or try some new breeds? Will watch this space!
