Hello! am happy to finally join this forum. I am a country raised girl from Mississippi but have lived my entire adult life in large cities... Los Angeles, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Atlanta and now Wichita. Wichita is the smallest city that we have lived in and I love that it has a small town feel to it. We raised chickens on our farm and I remember it being a smelly and unpleasant job. I suppose that raising 200 baby chicks at one time was smelly and a lot of work!
The opportunity came for me to get a few chickens about 6 months ago. I bartered for a chicken coop with my cousin who gave up the dream when dogs kept getting her hens. I was able to purchase 3 new layers (Wichita city ordinance says that you can have 3 hens without requiring a permit.) from a farmer north of here and thus it all began! They are Cinnamon Queens and are beautiful and wonderful layers. I had eggs all winter. They free range in my back yard during the day. It took a bit of effort to secure all of the low places below my privacy fence but I accomplished that and they are very happy having the run of the yard.
When deciding on their names, I opted to name them after my aunts. Marie, Opal and Francis. They then became the "Aunties" and that is how they are referred to whenever anyone asks about my chickens. "How are the Aunties doing?"
Unfortunately Francis woke up dead one morning a few weeks ago. It was a sad day in our house. I had plans to contact the original farmer and get another Francis but was waiting for this year's crop to get a bit bigger but a friend contacted me this Monday and shared that a guy in Wichita was getting rid of 10 new layers. He was restocking his flock but had too many. I can't pass up FREE so I asked for 2. (Don't do the math!) They are now Francis and Eva. Opal and Marie are not exactly thrilled with the addition but they are getting used to them for the most part.
I don't know their breed and would love to find out what they are. They are both still uncomfortable with me and I have yet to get a good picture of them. Francis is extremely camera shy.
Anyway, I look forward to learning from all of you and sharing chicken stories!

Hello and welcome to our community!

So glad you could join the BYC flock! Sounds like you have a nice little flock. Cinnamon Queens are a wonderful breed with a good reputation for egg production and temperaments. I'm sorry to hear that you lost Francis. It is always hard to lose our feathered friends.

I'm glad to hear that you found some replacements! They both look very healthy. From the photo, I'm not sure on the breed of the one on the left, but the bird on the right is definitely a Silver Laced Wyandotte. If you want to know what the other lovely pullet is, I suggest posting another photo that isn't in shadow. You can post here, or in the What Breed or Gender is This? section (What Breed Or Gender is This?), where you'll probably get more answers. I think that you'll really enjoy your new Silver Laced Wyandotte once she settles down. The Wyandotte is my favorite breed of chicken, because of their good egg production, docile temperaments, and cold/heat hardiness.

Welcome to our flock and I hope you enjoy BYC! Good luck with your new birds and your Aunties.

I'm not good on breeds so this is just a wild guess, the one on the left looks black, so I'd say a Black Australorp (or maybe black sex link) and the other a Silver Laced Wyandotte.

Thanks so much for that information. I will do some research on the Silver Laced Wyandotte breed so that I know more about her. It looks like you love them! The darker one is still not letting me get close enough for a good picture. Maybe soon, though! Thanks for your kind words and I look forward to chatting about Wyandottes!

I just started up on BYC and am also located in Wichita, KS.

We have ducks instead of chickens, and the permits are essentially the same. However, since we have two duck breeds of different sizes, we decided to get a pair each so we might also have four in our flock... Ha!

Also, our newest addition is Francine, which is pretty close to Francis. :) How coincidental.
