Hello! am happy to finally join this forum. I am a country raised girl from Mississippi but have lived my entire adult life in large cities... Los Angeles, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Atlanta and now Wichita. Wichita is the smallest city that we have lived in and I love that it has a small town feel to it. We raised chickens on our farm and I remember it being a smelly and unpleasant job. I suppose that raising 200 baby chicks at one time was smelly and a lot of work!
The opportunity came for me to get a few chickens about 6 months ago. I bartered for a chicken coop with my cousin who gave up the dream when dogs kept getting her hens. I was able to purchase 3 new layers (Wichita city ordinance says that you can have 3 hens without requiring a permit.) from a farmer north of here and thus it all began! They are Cinnamon Queens and are beautiful and wonderful layers. I had eggs all winter. They free range in my back yard during the day. It took a bit of effort to secure all of the low places below my privacy fence but I accomplished that and they are very happy having the run of the yard.
When deciding on their names, I opted to name them after my aunts. Marie, Opal and Francis. They then became the "Aunties" and that is how they are referred to whenever anyone asks about my chickens. "How are the Aunties doing?"
Unfortunately Francis woke up dead one morning a few weeks ago. It was a sad day in our house. I had plans to contact the original farmer and get another Francis but was waiting for this year's crop to get a bit bigger but a friend contacted me this Monday and shared that a guy in Wichita was getting rid of 10 new layers. He was restocking his flock but had too many. I can't pass up FREE so I asked for 2. (Don't do the math!) They are now Francis and Eva. Opal and Marie are not exactly thrilled with the addition but they are getting used to them for the most part.
I don't know their breed and would love to find out what they are. They are both still uncomfortable with me and I have yet to get a good picture of them. Francis is extremely camera shy.
Anyway, I look forward to learning from all of you and sharing chicken stories!
