I just purchased my 1st 2 chicks. They are australorps and their 1 week old. I bought a few books on how to build a coop with runner and how to raise healthy chickens. Hopefully what I don't read I can learn here. : )

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh Australorps! You are going to love this breed. They are so docile, friendly, affectionate, they are great layers and are heat and cold hardy. Healthier too than many breeds. Mine follow me around like drooling puppies and beg for my lap. If you want a bunch of lap sitters, get them out on the living room floor and out of the brooder...lay an old sheet down to catch the you know what..LOL..and because the world is so big to them, they will gravitate to your lap. They will never forget the comfort of your lap and will forever be lap babies. Keep working with them and they friendly up quick and by the time they are laying age, they will drool at the site of you. Ha!

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry from raising the chicks, building the coop, feeding your flock and keeping them healthy... https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

So make yourself at home here and ask any questions you may have.

Welcome to our flock! :-)

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! Congratulations on your new chicks :clap I'm sure you will enjoy this new adventure very much. Raising them is so much fun and very rewarding too. Australorps were featured in our breed focus project and I'm sure you will enjoy taking a look at it. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/988347/chicken-breed-focus-australorp

Wishing you the very best of luck with your chicks in the future. Enjoy your time here on BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC! One thing those books may not teach you is "Chicken Math" :) You may have 2 now but plan on a larger coop/runner.... You won't be able to stop at 2, chickens are addictive :)

One of my 2 chicks is a cockerel. They are 4 months old now. Due to city laws we cannot have a rooster but I love him very much and want a good home for him. Anyone have any ideas where he can go or what I should do?
