Greetings from Kentucky. We have learned so much from this site that we figured it was time to join.

We have had our pair of banties for about a year. Our hen, Bonnie, has recently started laying and already tried sitting. That is, until the neighbor's dog taught her pups to chase chickens and eat eggs...

We used to free range them, but have put them up for their safety and our own peace of mind. The other day we added to our flock. Bought 10 chicks from a local farmer. We kept 4 and gave 6 to family to raise. Out of the original 10, we have lost one and one isn't looking so good. We will probably have a distraught 10 year old on our hands in the next few hours. But the remaining 3 are doing well, eating, drinking, pooping, and playing. Will post pics soon...

Welcome to BYC from Florida. We live in the country and like to free range our chickens also. But we too have critter problems, not many dogs around, but a lot of hawks, owls, and raccoons. So we have been forced to put ours back in the pen also. Good luck and have a great day!

hi there! Welcome, fellow Kentuckian! We're here in the far western end of the state. I hope your chicken venture goes well. Sorry about your loss. In the future, it would be a good idea to keep any new chickens quarantined (not sharing air space, ground, housing, bedding, food or water dishes, etc.) for at least a month. There are several REALLY NASTY chicken diseases that can be transmitted from a seemingly healthy chicken to the rest of a flock with disastrous results. Some folks on here have lost entire flocks that way. Which area / region of KY are you in? (BTW, DH is ensconced on the couch getting ready to watch the KY vs NC basketball game)
