Hello from Las Animas, Colorado

Well after much reading and research I finally jumped in with both feet. This is my first time with chickens and I am totally in love! I purchased my coop and pullets at the local feed store. Drove 180 miles and bought a really nice outdoor dog kennel. It's going to be very sturdy and safe and I can relocate when needed. I still want to wrap the bottom with vinyl poultry netting to keep them from sticking their pretty little heads out of the chain link.

I'm pretty sure one of the girls if a buff orpington, 2 are white but not sure what breed(they are way bigger than the other 2) and the last is oh I don't know maybe a red sex link?




I have been greatly surprised by their personalities and their own brand of chicken smarts!

Very nice setup. Vinyl may keep your chicken faces inside but, won't prevent predators from shredding it. You need 1/2" hardware cloth around the perimeter from ground to about 3 feet up to keep raccoons from reaching in and dragging any bodypart they can through the fencing. They will eat any thing they can grab - the injuries to chickens can be horrific before they die.

You also need wire apron about 18" out on ground to deter diggers. Check out the runs section re: predator proofing.

Thanks for the tip. We are in town and do have a very secure 6-ft tall wood fence for the dogs. Do raccoons climb fences? I did put a tarp over the top 'cause I'm more worried about birds of prey!
