Hi everyone! I have been lurking for a while and learning a lot. We raised 3 RIRs, 2 Barred Rock, and 1 Ameraucana from chicks. We got our first egg yesterday! We are very excited.

We live in Raceland, Louisiana, where it is VERY hot right now. We also garden, and our chicken run is along the back side of the garden rows. We noticed a few weeks ago that one of the barred rocks was ready to lay. She was squatting in the yard and singing the egg song; however, we checked every day and no egg. We have been getting a bit of rain here lately, and their pen was a mud slop. Added some thick hay to cover their entire run a couple days ago, and we finally got an egg. We are also in the process of setting up a better water and feeder system for our girls.

Our favorite so far are the barred rocks. They are not as timid as the others... they come around us and let us pet and hold them. My husband says if we get any more hens, he wants some more barred rocks.

Here are some pics:

My daughter Avery and I, along with our hens and a shot of our corn & green beans!
