Maybe we're neighbors? I live in the mid-coast. I was given two white Bantam hens recently. They came through a couple of other folks, and any info on them has been essentially lost. They are banded - "7" & "8" (hence my member name!). I would love to know how to differentiate between OE Game hens and say, Japanese Bantams? Leghorns? They are both good looking birds. There is quite a bit of variation in size between the two, what I am assuming are, siblings.
I will get a couple of photos of them when they're out today and post them. Maybe with your expertise, you could help me ID their breed?
Thank goodness the rain has gone, eh? maureen
Hey! I live in Nobleboro, just about on the line into Jefferson. A photo would defenetly help, but I can tell you what some of the diferences are betwen O.E.G's, Leghorns and Japanese.
First off, O.E.G's are a single combed breed, have white legs, red ear lobs, males are usually dubed, and they have a medium to high set tail. Legorns have yellow legs, white ear lobs, can be single or rose combed, are a little bit bigger then O.E.G and Japanese, their tail shape is often bigger then the OEG, but usually have a sligtly lower set tail. Japanese are a true bantam, wich means there is no large fowl version of the breed, theye are single combed (fairly large comb on the males,) have red ear lobs, very short yellow legs, and a very upright tail set, somtimes called a "squaril tail."
Please post a picture I'd love to see them.
Thank you all for such a warm welcome.
Oh and for the Mainers mostly, and anyone interested, Cntral Maine Bird Fanciers is having thier annual spring show in May on memorial day weekend (I think the 30th...) at the Windsor Fair Grounds. Lots of birds to see and birds for sale too, as well as an auction.
you can also check out this page. I love it! There are links under the names. FS takes you to feathersite and that will give you pics of the breeds too

I'd like to also add, that central maine bird fanciers is having a tail gate sale april 18th in washington 9-1:00pm. all birds must be from NPIP flocks (so bring your id cards) or can be tested that day. we are having our meeting following the sale. good place to pick up some new stock and sell off some you won't be needing. http://www.centralmainebirdfanciers.org/
Geesh, chickens are difficult to photograph! I would say that her ear flaps are yellow; legs definitely yellow and they don't seem short/ compact to me; eggs are off-white/ light beige-ish; single comb - #8 has a much smaller comb, almost no comb at all.
#8 is smaller. She was roosted and snoozing when I came along with the camera!
