hello from manitoba!

Hello! I also live in Winnipeg! Do you live within the city limits? Because if so, Winnipeg does not allow backyard chickens! I also would like to be allowed to raise my own chickens in my own backyard and I am very disappointed by Winnipeg's outdated laws.

Check out these two articles about the subject:

Contact your local city council member about this! Let's get this changed.

hi there!
yes, i am in winnipeg city limits and am aware of the ridiculous, outdated bylaws regarding keeping chickens. however, i have heard from good sources that there are only about 6 by-law officers for the entire city and they need pretty strong, persistent complaints on this issue in order to investigate. i know of people that keep goats, bees, chickens and even miniature horses within city limits! so i'm taking the plunge and hoping that my neighbours will keep quiet if i bribe them with amazing eggs!

Great! Good for you! If we weren't renting I would probably do the same. At the same time, you should definitely contact your city council person and tell them you want them to vote for chickens when they vote for the new bee law! It should be legal in Winnipeg. Happy egg laying!

Hi from Winnipeg! (Oct.19th 2012)

There is a movement currently to legalize hens! We have the support from city council member Harvey Smith, he is willing to put a motion through, if he can get someone to second it and support his request for review of our outdated bylaws! Please contact your (an any other for that matter) ward council member and request that they support Harvey Smith in putting a motion forward to review this bylaw to allow hens within city limits: http://www.winnipeg.ca/council/contact.stm

Here is a facebook group "Chickens for WinnipEGGers" with more info on recent activity: https://www.facebook.com/groups/c4wpg/

Also, there is an online petition you can sign here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/wpgchicks/
I have plastered it everywhere: Facebook, emails, brought it out during family dinners...so go nuts if you want!
So far we have 705 signatures, with a goal of 1,000!

Would love to meet more Winnipeg chicken owners, especially with the chilly weather approaching soon - it would be great to exchange coop-warming ideas!
