We have a toddler son. No pets. I'm a software developer and never had any pets other than goldfishes. Hubby is a product manager and never had any pets. We don't know anything about keeping animals. And we don't have green thumbs.

We live in a single-family detached home in residential area. The backyard backs to a railroad track, so we have one less neighbour to worry about. The next door neighbour on one side keeps pigeons -- there are at least two lofts. (I'm not sure about the legality of the pigeon lofts though.)

The reason I'm considering keeping chickens in my backyard is to provide the freshest, organic, and hormone-free eggs to my egg-loving toddler. My mom, who doesn't live with us but comes over to our house every day to take care of my son, lived on a farm when she was very young and had raised chicken, so we have a little bit of expertise we can tap on.

I joined this forum because I want to learn more about the legality of raising chickens in my town (and how best to make it legal if it isn't), the financial and time investments required, and the know-how.

Welcome from near Chatham, ON.!!!! Can't help you much with the city ordinances, except to check your bylaws. How are your neighbours? Obvioulsl one love his pigeons, --would the other be accepting of chickens?

I am also from Markham, my backyard back end also facing road, only 2 side neighbors, i love to have chickens in my back yard, why not we should submit an application to our city Govt. to make it legal, if pigeons are allowed, why not chickens, these are more productive and use full birds as compare of pigeons.

Saba.
