My name is Tom and my wife's name is Beth. My wife and I decided to get some chickens to play with so here we are. She likes the more unusual chickens so we now have 3 red Silkies and 2 gray Silkies. She is looking at getting some Poilish as soon as she decides on what color whe wants. I am in the process of building a bigger coop so that there is room for any FUTURE additions to the flock so I don't have to make additions to the coop!! LOL I have read enough posts here to know to make it BIG the first time. I am lucky enough to have a friend that just retired from the USDA and has a Ph.D. in Poultry Science, so I have a good backup for problems. He also has about 400 of his own flock!!

We are both Superintendants of a feature at our county fair called Old MacDonalds Barn, Milking Parlor and Birthing Center, where we have a variety of animals and try and educate the public on farm animals and their use in our area. It is very fun and interesting.
So, on the the list of questions.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes and no. I had chickens in Jr high school as an FFA project. My wife has never had anything but a dog. Chickens were aquired on 9/18/2011

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
5

(3) What breeds do you have?
Silkies

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google search

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Me - Antique tractor restoration, street rods, racing, fishing, snorkling.
My Wife - mostly the same as me with the addition of Cross stitching, knitting, collecting pottery.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 dogs. One is a Treeing Walker Coonhound, and the other is a Jack Russell, Springer Spaniel, dad was a travelling salesman mix. Both are rescues.

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. I haven't seen a walker coon hound in years. My grandfather had a few when I was a child because they were his favorite breed to hunt with. They're very intelligent dogs
