Hi everyone! This is our first adventure with chickens and we're really looking forward to it. We picked up our first two lil' peeps yesterday, two adorable Araucanas. Originally had set out to get 4 Leghorns, but they were sold out before we could get there. I have a 6 year old who had been looking forward to it all week so when I called ahead to be sure they had them, suddenly was forced to find somewhere else with some babies! I really wanted white egg-layers (don't like the taste of brown eggs) but when I couldn't find any, one place I called suggested Easter Eggers so here we are. We'll probably keep trying for 2 Leghorns as well.

I've found lots of great info here at BYC and hope someday to contribute. Thanks a bunch!

Hello, and welcome to BYC and the joys of chicken ownership!!

There is a thread for Maryland where you might find people close to you:

And if you happen to be on the peninsula, there is a Delmarva thread also:

Brown eggs and white eggs taste the same when fresh. Fresh eggs taste a lot different than store bought eggs. They have a stronger egg taste, if that mkes any sense. I know for me, the fresh egg taste took a little bit of getting used to.
The Araucanas should lay a greenish blue egg. I want some of them!!

Where are you from in Maryland.....I just ordered 10 leghorns and could part with 2 chicks. I already have 6 leghorns and they are laying machines. Large white eggs....usually 6 per day. I have 9 brown egg layers and I only get 4 - 7 eggs per day. The chicks are scheduled to arrive 4/19.
BTW....I cannot tell the difference between the brown eggs and the white eggs. I can tell the difference between my white eggs and thhe ones I used to buy in the store. My white eggs are so much better. The store eggs are very bland.

Oh and welcome to BYC.

Hi Thomas - I'm in Edgemere/Dundalk area. Port Deposit is what? about an hour or so north? So yes, I'd be happy to adopt 2 of your leghorn babies.

I know it sound crazy - but I think they taste different (brown vs white). I know the free range eggs are way better (I usually get them from Whole Foods) and once got the brown ones and they just weren't the same. Anyone know how the blue/greens stack up?

Kristy
