Hi I am AV and I am 29 years old. I have had chickens all my childhood but since moving into the city I never had them. I breed Hook Bill birds and finally convinced my flatmate that we have enough room and this weekend I will be building the run. I have an old avairy that I can use as a coop so that they will be safe at night and then they will be allowed out during the day in their run and also into the full back yard under supervision as we have two little dogs.

I am not allowed a rooster and only allowed up to 5 hens. I am planning on going to the farmers market and seeing what hens they have avaiable once the run is built.

I had RIR growing up as well as Isa Browns and Silkys. I would not have Silkys again as I had issues with their undercarragie becoming matted and had to clip them so still picking out what I want to get. I want them to be tame and easy to handle as they will be my pets as well as producing eggs.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and learning lots about back yard chickens!

Hello from the US, southwest Washington State to be exact. We are new to chickens but ended up getting three breeds, Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons and Russian Orloffs, which I guess are somewhat rare. We are just in love with the Orpingtons. They are so calm and tame and do not pick on anyone, they just seem to get along. They all look just alike however so I have not named my eight pullets. We got an Orpington roo as well because we decided to just raise the one breed.
This is a great place to learn more about chickens, I've learned so much here.

The experts here helped me figure out what kind of rare birds I had. I bought 12 "RIR" sexed pullets, but half of them ended up looking very strange. I could not figure it out. I posted the photos online, and they told me they were Russian Orloffs. So I called the feed store, sure enough they had russian orloffs for sale that day.
I still would have been perplexed if not for the nice folks in this group however. I was able to learn more about my strange birds. I decided to sell three and keep three, and was lucky enough to trade with someone else from BYC for two RIR pullets and an Orpington roo. So it all worked out great!
Nice to see someone from your neck of the woods, what breeds do you get down there?

Thanks guys! Wow the Orpingtons are AMAZING never even knew they where a breed going to have to see if I can find some of them!

ETA - my flat mate and I have been looking at diferent breeds and came across the Light Sussex and just fell in love with their look so now we are madly researching the breed. Have found one breeder but will be a 4 month wait for chickens so going to see if I can find some older ones.
