Hello all. Just wanting to introduce myself and our girls. My name is Laya and we have two Buff Orpington chicks now three weeks old. Kellogg is the biggest and so far a bit bossy. Porquette is our sweet girl. We live in the suburbs of Miami and decided to free range in our backyard when an unfortunate hen came into our lives a little too late for saving. (Although we tried our best).
My husband and I have always loved chickens, frequenting Key West to admire the beautiful Roos parading in the streets. I decorated my kitchen thinking that would be the closest thing to having chickens. When we discovered that county zoning allows hens, we starting building a small coop right away. (I posted the coop materials and pictures earlier).
A little about my background. I grew up on farms with large livestock in Texas, Iowa & Kentucky. I did work one summer collecting eggs for a neighbor with a large operation. My aunt has always had a small (about 10 hens and a roo) free range flock, but that is all my experience with chickens. With the exception of being occasionally chased by a neighbors rooster as a kid when sneaking into their garden.
I now have a teenage step-daughter, who has never had these experiences. She was born here on the city and wishes for things like snow and the smell of rotting leaves in the fall. She adores the chicks as they follow her around the yard. After much research I chose Buff Orpingtons so she could have a "pet". As well as learn how to take care of something else that will eventually give back to you.
I'm leaning lots on here. Thank you for the posts and I hope you enjoy mine.
