Welcome to the flock, I loved hearing your story I joined a while back to learn about keeping chickens. We just finally bought a house outside of town, moving in May so I will finally get to get a few chickensHi all! My name is Michelle but everyone calls me Shelly. I joined because I just love, love, love my chickens and I want to learn all I can about them.
When I was a kid my grandparents had chickens and I always loved watching them and one day my dad went to the feed store to get feed for the horses and came home with 2 chicks and 2 ducks. We didn't have an incubator or a heat lamp for them so we had them in the house. Dad put the chicks in my room. There they were in a box peeping like crazy and I am trying to sleep, so what do I do? I laid them on my chest, put my hands over them and slept with them! Lol...and they didn't even poop on meI named them Chip and Dip. Any way, Chip and Dip turned out to be beautiful Rhode Island Red roosters. Dad wasn't very happy about that, but my sisters and I were already attached to them. They were very tame and would sit on your shoulder like a parrot. So he let us keep them for the summer and then he gave them away
and I have been wanting chickens ever since. I never really cared much for the ducks. My sister was more into them, but they never got as tame as the chickens did and we didn't keep them very long.
So now I am in my 40's and my husband and I purchased a home on 14 acres. One day my husband went to his friend's house and came home with a little chick in his pocket. This little guy lost his mama and was actually hatched by a duck. Needless to say, this little chick was peeping like crazy and driving us nuts! No, I didn't sleep with it...lol I went to the feed store and bought 5 more. So now I have my chickens and I love them to death. The little chick he brought home in his pocket is now a beautiful mix breed rooster we call Popcorn Chicken and we also have 3 RIR hens and 2 Australorp hens. We are getting 5 eggs a day! I didn't think they would lay eggs that often, but I'm not complaining!
