A rooster would have been nothing more than a speed bump for the fox. A rooster cannot protect the flock from much more than another rooster.
If you free range, you have to accept that you will have losses. Having the dog stay out with the flock is your best protection against ground predators as long as he stays with them and is large enough to deter them.

Oh I know I’m just going to try my hardest to keep an eye on the chickens as best as I can.
We have a Weimaraner. He is about 65lbs.

Yes he is. He doesn’t bother them at all just watches them run around.
