Hi all, I've been browsing this past year without an account but now I've finally decided it's time to join up.
I've been raising chickens for a little over ten years, but I'd say I still have lots I could learn about them. As of this posting I have ten chickens in total: eight twenty-week-old pullets who live together in a coop and run (one of whom laid their first egg recently!), and a three or four year old hen and rooster pair who free-range separately on the property. The eight pullets are pairs of Blue Cuckoo Marans, Red Stars/Sexlinks, Easter Eggers, and Spotted Sussex. My two older chickens are both Barred Rocks.
As for my favorite aspects of raising chickens, I love looking at them and watching them
p), I enjoy trying to give them a fulfilling life, and while I don't eat many eggs myself, it feels great to go out to the coop and see what's in the nest box (plus friends & family are always happy to receive a fresh dozen).
My other hobbies include gardening (haven't quite gotten the hang of that one yet, haha), reading, fishing, (very, very) amateur photography, watching bad movies, and videogames.
I currently live with my mother and younger brother in Michigan, and I have an amazingly supportive partner in Brazil who lovingly listens to all of my rants and babbles (chicken related or otherwise). Aside from the chickens, we have a kitty (nine or ten y/o) and a dog (three y/o).
I discovered BackYard Chickens earlier this year (around April or May), when I was doing some much needed research on mail-order chicks, poultry health, and potential coop renovations.
Thanks for having me!
