Hi Everyone,

We are brand new to raising chickens and have found this site to be so very helpful so far!. We have begun our flock with 8 chicks... 4 Golden Laced Wyandotte and 4 Speckled Sussex. We are in love already. They are in a tote, currently, and we are searching for plans for a coop and run. I was told that if we had a large enough tote, they could stay in there for months... I'm getting the feeling that our time is much shorter than that!

We also need to learn more about keeping our girls warm enough in the winter here. I know some people personally who raise chickens, and there is such a variety to how they handle the winter months. Some just use tarps, some use heaters... what about the water... how to keep that from freezing... so much to learn, but we will love the process for sure!

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. As long as you have a draft free building, the chickens will be fine. Deep litter method works to keep the ground warmer. I wounldn't use any kind of tarp. It not only doesn't retain any heat, they leak. Look into cold hardy breeds as well. :thumbsup

Thank you everyone. @4-H Chicken Mom... we're told our girls are cold-hardy. So that's good. We were going to convert our unused dog house... 4X3, but feel there is just not enough room to provide good space, roosts and ventilation... the girls would have their head right up in the drafty part. So... we're looking to build new, now. Hopefully we can make the one we like work for us. With no actual plans, it could be a challenge.
