Hi Everyone! I am super excited to be here!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am not new to chickens, per se, as my ex and I raised a small backyard flock years ago. That being said, I will probably ask a ton of questions, and then remember that I used to know that when I get the answer!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I will be getting my first chicks this summer from a local hatchery. I am only allowed three hens in town, so that is what I will get.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I want to raise heritage breeds (WAY too long a story for this post), so I am currently looking at Jersey Giant or Dominique. I will likely seek some feedback from the community on the pros and cons of each.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Chickens are amazing. I never dreamed I would get attached to a chicken, but once we had started raising them, they were just SO much fun! I have really missed them. I am also very excited to teach my children about animal husbandry and where their food actually comes from.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My other hobbies include crochet, canning, gardening, hiking, fishing, and I am getting ready to start making my own soap.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a single mama to two amazing boys. We have no other pets. I'm in the Army full-time in the Missouri Army National Guard, so we stay pretty active and very busy!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
My ex and I were BYC members years ago when we had our flock. Heck, he may still be on here! Hahaha. I decided to join now that I am going to have my very own flock! This community is amazing!
