Brahmas would make great meat birds, although double check that their maturity is medium to fast. Some large birds mature VERY slowly (36 weeks or more).

Ok I read 4.5 mos so maybe I may need to rethink my strategy. The Brahmas are soooo pretty tho!

Whatsayyou about guineas? That's what my hubby wants so maybe he'll be happier about starting them sonner with the breed HE wants? Lol

I don't think "pretty" makes them taste better though. You may want to check out the "meatbird " threads on BYC and find out what others consider the best choices.

Those familiar with Cackle Hatchery, the Frybirds are CHEAP, but I was afraid to do those for fear we'd have top heavy birds with feet problems. Anyone know what breed those *actually* are?

Guineas are pretty wild, and love to fly. They are also NOISY. Much different than chickens.
Start with chickens before moving on to any other breeds.
Good egg layers include Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds, Welsummers, Sex Links, Leghorns, and Sussex. Good meat breeds include Rhode Island Reds, Cochin crosses.

Im doing layers too, hence why I wanted "pretty" ones. Maybe "ugly" is better for culling.lol jkjk the actual culling makes me squeamish. Tho I dressed roadkill turkey once...$115 bird...lol my DD hit with her car. But I'm trying to desensitize myself to the culling part
