I Am A Newbie To The Forum As Well As Raising Chickens! I Have Drawn Plans For Our Chicken Coop, With Help From Chicken Coops For Dummies. I Am Also Studying The Chicken Breeds. Now I Need To Know If It Is Better To Buy From A Farm Supply Store For Your Chicks Or From A Breeder? Also I Am Very Interested In The Breed, Java. Does Anyone Know A Good And Reliable Source For Javas? It Will Be A Couple Of Months Before We Will Be Adding Our Chickens As The Weather Here Is Too Cold To Work In.

I try to buy from breeders now. We have had problems with egg peritonitis (sp?) that I was told is common with hatchery birds....
 
Welcome to BYC! Chickielady is in Raymond and has Black Javas. If you go to the index and click on "where am I, where are you" you will find a thread called "washintonians" It's a great place to see all the mossies here in WA. Welcome and have fun!
 
Hatchery Chicks are fine for pets and egg layers, but if you are interested in a particular breed with breed characterisitics definately go through a breeder, thats the best way to get some matching the breed definitions. I am into orpingtons and my breeder flock looks like a completely different type than hatchery orpingtons. It really is amazing. I do not know much about Javas, but do know that the people who have them, LOVE them, so I would say thats a good sign

Also they are a rare breed if I have my facts straight, so preserving the breed is a pretty good incentive as well!
