I just bought a house (today in fact!) with 4.5 acres of land. It is in fact an established farm including chickens! I have never owned chickens and know very little but insist on having healthy happy birds and becoming quite knowledgeable on chickens. I can use all the help I can get and welcome constructive criticism. I'm a veteran and am glad to now be a farmer!

Welcome to BYC, thanks for your service, congratulations on your new home, and good luck in establishing your flock.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! Actually the coop come WITH chicks! I'm not sure what breed but they are a pretty gold color and I think "booted" but I couldn't get a close enough look. Does that bring any ideas up? The owner isn't sure because they are his son's. We move into our home soon (have to close and move our stuff from IOWA) and I can't wait to get started with the chickens!! I'd like to have dual purpose breeds and definitely a Jersey Black rooster. I have seen some hawks around so...Yeah...
