A month ago I was at a farmers market and seen 2 beautiful 1 1/2 year old white silkie rosters for sale. I feel in-love with them, they were so pretty so I brought them home. I had been thinking of getting me some chickens and to my surprise there they were. Then I got to thinking "what in the world am I going to do with 2 roosters?" Even thought about taking them back to the sale, lol. Then I thought "no I'll just keep them and God willing and timing I will get me a couple pullets. Come to find out pullets and hens are impossible to find, and getting a run of chicks is a gamble of getting stuck with a bunch of roos.
Well, I had a call tonight in interest for one of my roos in trade for 2 of their pullet red silkies. I was so excited that I was going to finally have a pair. Well when they got here they fell in-love with the one roo I have. but the pullets/hens they had were not full blooded silkies, I think they were a cross between RIR and silkie. I let him go for the two hens and was ok with that for now for the eggs, but after they left I got to missing my roo I have bonded with in trade of not what I really wanted. Now I'm heart broken and loved that roo more than I thought. I wish I had not made that exchange.. :( Im just to nice.
In your expedience of raising a breed what would you recommend to get started?
Thank you and look forward to chatting with others who love chickens.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about how much you miss your little roo, it is amazing how attached you can get too the little guys. At least it sounds like he has a good home and has his own little flock of girls now. Your girls should be nice little layers also, like you said, the eggs will be nice, and I am sure your boy likes having two girlfriends! TwoCrows gave you some great links for figuring out what breeds you might like. Cochins are another breed that, like Silkies, are quite popular as pets, other nice breeds that lay better and make nice pets are Sussex, Orpintons, Australorps and Wyandottes, Easter Eggers are a mix, but are often friendly birds and are popular because of the colored eggs.
