They are calm but I didn't handle them much as chicks so they aren't friendly as such. I'm going to be using them to breed but hoping to mix wiht other breeds to get all sorts of good colours (I also have Araucanas and will be getting some cream legbars too).

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am intrigued by Marans and yes so far the colors I have seen so far are Black Copper, White, Cuckoo, Birchen (blue), Splash, and Wheaten!

I want the breeding process to be something I can share with my family so having calm chickens will help.

Still debating which to start with and I thank you for your experience with the Marans.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock! :welcomeBYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost! :highfive:
I voted the Ameraucanas but Marans I had a very good experience with as well. They lay super dark eggs and have a stunning ornamental appearance. Ameraucanas have wonderful features too because of their colorful egg variety and are generally easygoing with their flock mates.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

I love Brahmas, I’m planning on breeding my golden partridge, lemon pyle and blue buff columbian brahmas this year.
They’re a very friendly, docile and quiet breed, good egg layers, Great with children and they’re amazing broodies being able to cover a large amount of eggs as they’re so big, and they’re great mother hens.
Here’s some pics of mine

Brahmachicken240 all I can say to you is your chickens make me drool and I am not a person that gets envy easily...

May I ask how does one go about breeding a Lemon Pyle Brahma? Those are just gorgeous!!! I have been drooling over your Brahmas since I started to get the itch for chickens a while ago.

This is the spot we are thinking about placing our coop(s) this year. We still have some small trees to clear out. I will be working this weekend and probably next weekend to finish clearing all the small trees and brush. The photo was taken this morning before work. The area should receive dappled sunlight. I believe here in NC it's more important to have shade during the summer than a ton of sunlight during the winter. The rosebush that was planted long before we got here is going to be removed and given away.

The distance between the trees on the right in the first picture and the stand of trees in this picture is about 90 feet. This stand of trees I will be clearing out the brush, smaller trees, and trees too close to others that are smothering or weakening the other trees.

That's a beautiful area, I think your coop will look really nice there!
