Hey there everyone!
Definitely a newbie here in every way. We got our first chicks ever about 3 days ago...3 buff orp and 3 reds. We have em set up in the brooder and being handled quite frequently by myself and our 8 and 16 yr old. Finally coming around to being held...which is nice. Going to start on coop construction and have been reading up on this site for a few days. Decided time to join in case we ended up with any questions.

We have quite a few furry critters but these are our first feathered and its been quite the learning experience!

Cool! Another NC newbie! We're getting our first chickens next weekend (not the fluffy kind - ours were hatched in January).

Chicks are definitely the fun way to get into chickens. 6 seems like a such a "safe" number - wait 'til the "chicken math" gets you!

For the next few weeks, our local hardware store will have chicks, and i will have to make sure my daughter isn't with me when I make a feed run. Otherwise, I'll have a hard time walking out without more of the little fuzzy things. I will be setting a few eggs in a little bit, though, so maybe that will soothe her desire to have some little cheepies. Hatching is fun, too!

I don't know what kind your reds are, but I can vouch for Buff Orpingtons. We don't have any now, but the ones I have had were beautiful, great temperaments, and good layers (also very sneaky broodies, so watch 'em!)

Have fun, and once again, welcome to the forum!

Thanks on the avatar-She's our newest doggie addition our AmStaff Bella AKA Tonka Truck as she is well adept at excavating and relocating dirt around the back yard lol. If I can ever get the chicks to hold still I will get them on there

We are in Pfafftown NC...close to Winston-Salem for my fellow Carolinian

Though Im orginally from Columbus Ohio.

I did alittle research on breeds and saw the buffs would be a good choice...the reds I saw mixed opinions of but alas those were our only pullet choices at our local TSC. And honestly Im not really sure which reds we got...looked like it was a mixed lot of them in there...two smaller girls have a nice red coloring and the other red is a bit bigger and kinda looks like she has racing stripes lol...Hoping we dont accidently end up with a rooster or we will be needing to rehome him.

Thanks again for the warm welcome

One of my co-workers got buff orpingtons as her starter chickens about three years ago, and she's loved them! Relatively few problems, and very sweet-natured birds - although hers are funny about never laying in the nice pretty boxes they have. They'd rather hide the eggs and make mama go on an egg hunt!
