I need to dig around and find the right place to ask these questions, but after all these welcomes, I thought I would ask here to start. If we want just eggs, which kind of chicken should we get? Also, we have a killer kitten (10 mos old). How do you have chicks and a kitten?

We keep red sex links, and they are fantastic egg layers. RIRs are also popular.
The kitten won't bother the chickens when the birds are big enough (at least hopefully not! Our neighbourhood cats are scared witless of our big grown hens) but when they're small best to keep them separated. It should be as easy as not letting the kitten near the coop.

Good luck with convincing your husband. We live in the city, and keeping chickens is great despite the small-ish backyard.
