Hello everyone! I am new to the forums AND to having chickens. I recently acquired some when a friend of mine couldn't take care of his, so now...I am the one at a loss. I would like to do right by them, so some research is needed! As of right now they are in a 10x10 dog kennel with a shade top, and a large dog house that they all go in at night to sleep. They're also young, so they are just starting to lay some eggs. I feel terrible about them having to sleep in a dog house, though! I'm going to go to tractor supply today and see about getting a coop for inside the kennel as well as an extension.

I guess that I will be snooping around here a lot and trying to find threads that will give advice for new members. My biggest question is organic vs not. The bag of feed that I got them is not organic, but the fruits and veggies that I give them are. They're pretty much left over from what I don't eat. Is there something special that I need to do to raise them organically other than buying organic feed and giving them organic treats?

Thanks in advance!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How nice of you to take these chickens in. Have you stopped by the learning centre? Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Lots of great tips on how to best care for your new birds. Lots on feeding and housing them. I'm afraid I don't feed mine organically so can't be of much help to you on that. But please do drop by the feeding your flock section of the forum ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/12/feeding-amp-watering-your-flock

Good luck and enjoy BYC :frow

BYC has a very nice learning center for new and old members

The organic feed is very good for them but a bit more costly as the members here who purchase it can testify to but well worth the price in the end ....

BYC also has a section on building coops near the top of the home page ...
