Hello all! My name is Rick, and my ole lady is Amy.
We got started with chickens last year during the summer when our neighbor up the road offered us a Araucana Rooster. Amys 10 year old daughter asked if he lays eggs and John, the Neighbor said "No, but if you take him we will throw in a egg laying hen to match."
Turns out John sells his eggs and does not want them fertile. After a lil discussion we decided to accept his offer. We named the rooster Goro, and the hen Carley. We needed a pen so I used some concrete mesh and quickly formed a 10'x10' cage supported with 2x4s at the corners, top and bottom. We then covered that and made a roof with poultry fencing. Its pretty strong and no coyotes, foxes, wolves, or neighbors dogs can get in. Then we built our 10'x6' coup. The chickens seemed happy as we built around them, lol.
Later my Vet Tech daughter asked if we wanted another chicken, we said sure and she gave us a red the humane society had saved. The red was named Lolla, and she was a setting hen who had mothered a clutch of 9 peeps last year. When we picked up Lolla, my daughter also gave us a pure white hen, we do not know what kind she is. We named her Snowball.
During the weekends when we are able to be around, we let them free range. They are pretty neat and follow us all around. We quickly fell in love with them and decided to get more. Make the coup bigger! We ordered from McMurray Hatchery with our neighbor John, who gave us the first two. 15 more to add to Goros' Harem. They arrived up the farm 3 weeks ago. Being John and his wife have a brooding coup, they are taking care of them till they are 6 weeks old. After that, we will pick them up and bring them home. We visit them frequently, they are so cute. The girls love them already!
When I was a child my parents raised leghorns. I can't remember much about the rules and such, but I do have a good knowledge of chicken raising in its self I guess. The rest will come as we raise them. We have 3 weeks to learn as much as we can to improve our knowledge!
That’s why I thought joining here would be cool. We could use all the help we can get!
So again, hello all!

I dont want pigs anymore, they stink. well I'm started with some chickens. Rick has already talked about Goro, Carley, Snowball, and Lola. So I will tell you about the rest of us. Between the 2 of us we have 6 children. He has twin girls 22 years old and another girl 13 year old. I have a son 20 years old and 2 daughters 19 years old and 10 years old. We also have a barn cat of the neighbors that adopted us, since she no longer goes home. her name is Tabby or Tabeasta as we came to call her. (not really a cat person but I have come to love her

) We also feed the wild birds, turkeys, and deer.
Our 2 youngest want ducks. Now that they have seen them at the neighbors. Rick says no, I said maybe in a year or 2. Lets get use to the chickens first. They seem to be a lot of fun so far!
