Well I have been baptised into chicken ownership quite by accident. I've been a city girl my whole life and lived in upstate NY. I just moved to NE TN a few months ago.

Yesterday, we found a rooster on our property. He seems to have adopted us! 7:30am he was crowing his fool head off outside and my dogs were NOT happy about it.

I know literally nothing about chickens. We've been feeding him our parrot food, which he likes btw. We have coyotes in our area and I was up all night long worried about him last night. This morning I saw him coming out of our barn/garage so I think he roosted in there last night.

I'm so clueless right now as to what to do for this guy. I'm doing some reading on this site so I see that the same things I feed my parrots, I can feed him as well.

Funny thing is that I told my husband a few months ago that I wanted to get some chickens to help with the bugs here and to also keep us in eggs. But I had wanted to do some research BEFORE hand. LOL

Anyone have any advice for me about how to take care of Ricky the Rooster?? Thanks!

Laurie the city girl who has gone country and is lovin' it!

Before you get too attached, you might want to check in the area and see if his owners are missing him. After that if he's still yours go to the feedstore and get him scratch, make sure he has a safe place to roost and plenty of water.

You will find there are alot of us TN people here. I am in Greene County. You will want to check in on the TN thread that is in the Where are You where am I section. You will find many are in your area. Most likely your osster belongs to someone and is a free rangiong bird. So ask around who has chickens. There is alot here to read and much to learn take your time do not feel rushed. This is a very friendly place and many will be glad to help you out with great advice.

Well there are only two neighbors near us and neither of them have chickens so we don't know where this guy came from. We've drove around and knocked on doors but no one seems to know where this guy came from. LOL

He was out there crowing his fool head off at 6:15am. LOL Everytime he did, my husband and I burst out laughing. All my "city" friends think I'm nuts and my future daughter in law asked me last night if I was going to let him in the house!!!!

Right now he's sitting on top of our one car.

I'm going to put a posting on Craigslist that he's here. Someone suggested that he may be a fighting rooster but he's in pretty good shape. He is missing some feathers from the back of his head and a few tailfeathers but that could be from running through the woods.

What should I do for this guy? I can use all the help I can get!

Thanks!

Laurie

Now that you got a roo, you'll need to get him a few female friends
