(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have never owned chickens myself. I have been around chickens at my grandma's house. I ordered my first 20 chickens a few months ago. They'll be here in a week! I also just put in another order for 12 hatching eggs that will be here in 2 months.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I don't have any right now. Will hopefully have around32 25 by this summer! I know a lot of hatcheries send a few extra chicks or eggs, from what I've read.
ETA: I completely forgot that a few local ladies want to buy a couple of the Ayem Cemani, once they're hatched and a few months old to see gender. One lady wants a few hens if I've got extras. Another 2 just want a roo for their lonely hen. So we shall see how many end up in my backyard coop!
(3) What breeds do you have?
12 Ayem Cemani hatching eggs coming Mid-May
5 Easter Egger - female
5 Black Sumatra - not sexed
5 Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus (could be a variety of French Marans or Barnevelder)
5 Silkies - not sexed
Only keeping 1 or 2 roos. As I'm sure we'll end up a with a few.
ETA: Any spare roos will go in a chicken tractor on pasture.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Don't know yet! I'm really looking forward to having them though!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Sewing, knitting, reading, pottery, woodworking/building things. Currently building a small coop for brooding outside.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Me, DH, 3 girls (8, 11, 12), 3 pet dogs, 3 LGD dogs, 4 mousers, 7 kiko/saanen goats (2 expecting any day now, 2 expecting in the next month or two), 17 mangalitsa pigs (10 of which are likely pregnant right now!)... We are in the process of starting a pasture raised meat operation. Someday other value add items from the goats, chickens, eventually bees. I spend a lot of time working on things related to that. Husband works 2 jobs from home as a software engineer. He helps on the weekends and when he can. I do all the cooking, most of the cleaning, and all of the schoolwork with the kids. We've been homeschooling for 6 years now. We're definitely in a busy season of life!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I happened upon the forum while searching online for information about chickens. Figured with the chicks coming next week, I'd better sign up and start reading & chatting!
