Hello From New Brunswick Canada

G'Day from down under Stepnout :frowWelcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also visit the Canadian Thread and pop in and say hello.

Hi there Stepnout,

I'm looking to get chickens, but I don't know much. I live near Moncton, NB. Do you know if there's a guide (that takes into account the conditions of NB) that I could consult?

Thanks!

- Dom

Welcome - try posting in the Canada thread.

Hello and welcome to BYC. You will find everything you need right here on this site. Just search the many post. In Moncton you will have to contend with snow, frozen water. Cold winter rains. I covered my birds in with clear poly, allowing light to enter the pen. As you will find out it is extremely important to allow openings in any winter cover or covers you may use for proper ventilation. Chickens can handle the cold as long as they have proper ventilation and no moisture accumulates in their living quarters. If they are dry they can handle the cold. I personally would not heat their enclosure because if you loose power they would not be acclimated to the extreme cold we can experience in NB. I do however heat their water.I also would suggest a higher protein food for winter to help them keep warm. Coop And pen cleanliness is very important for health of birds as well. So when you design your set up keep ease of cleaning a priority. Defence from our NB predators is important raccoons, mink, weasels, fox, coyotes and birds of prey will all try and take your birds. Good planning and coop/pen design before hand will alleviate most if not all issues that may arise. Don’t be discouraged keeping chickens is wonderful and really quite easy once you get into the routine. Just a little preplanning goes a long way.
take care and enjoy
