Hi all! I'm new to BYC (obviously). We decided last year when we bought our beloved new home in Warren, RI that we would get chickens, but had to put it off until after our backyard wedding (last weekend!).
So, days after the wedding, we set up our two beehives and scored a rockin' old wooden children's playhouse to make into a sweet coop. We are planning on starting with 3-4 chickens, probably some combo of RI Reds/Barred Rocks/Australorps, and surely chicken math will eventually catch up with us. Luckily, the playhouse is enough for 4, and more. We won't tell my dear new husband that I *maybe* chose this way on purpose...
I found backyardchickens.com after my husband got really into some beekeeping forums that really helped him get started with our other new adventure, and I've been hooked ever since! It's been so helpful for planning, ideas, etc. and I know it will come in handy once we get our girls settled in.
We live in an old farmhouse, set on a few acres that used to be an apple orchard, way back when. We're really into antiquing, gardening, and hanging out with friends around the fire pit -- hey, as a PhD student in Classics (that's ancient Greek and Latin), sometimes you just have to put the books down and get some fresh air!
While we're at it, if anyone from the RI/SE MA/SE CT area has suggestions on where to find a few pullets, I'm all ears! I'm sure I will be sharing some photos of our coop project in the (very!) near future...
