Nice to meet you all, I'm Serene from New York I've had chickens going on 10 years now , but I found out something recently that I didn't know before - that some chickens crow, which is what brought me here to your group. Was hoping to find out if anyone else had this happen. Low and behold it's something mentioned here several times - so it seems even an old dog learns new tricks occassionally. Wondering if anyone else has suggestions about ways to discourage this in hens? The area I live in has changed quite a bit and the new folks dont like that i have chickens or dogs and they are constantly calling the town about one thing or another.
I'd hate to give her away she's not even a year old.

Hens can crow like roosters and even grow spurs. Especially if you don't have a rooster, they can take the place of one. I have never had hens crow before, but I have some very dominant hens that think they are roosters. LOL I don't know if you can discourage them from doing this. Maybe someone will chime in here soon that can give you some advice. Of course be absolutely certain she is not a he. :-)

Great to have you aboard and good luck with your flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Never had a hen that actually crowed, but some that were darn bossy. Maybe do search on keeping roosters quiet, some of the techniques would work on a hen?

Can someone tell me how to get a picture up on my profile?
