I've been dreaming of having my own backyard flock for years and am finally ready to take the plunge this year. I've been consoling myself with painting chickens (I'm a fine artist) for a few years but I really want my own feathered babies now!

I plan on starting with 6-8 chickens. As far as breeds, the two most important qualities are hardy to a northern climate and temperment.

I can get buff orpingtons and aracaunas at my local feed store (minimum order is 6). I'd love to get a couple of silkies if I can find them.

Can anyone advise me if those three breeds would do well together? I appreciate any feedback and I will certainly look through the forums. There is so much great info here.

They Should do just Fine together .. I Live in Rural NY and Have Both that live in Perfect Harmony and do well in my unheated coop though I do keep a light through the winter for better Egg production .. I Have had no problem Mixing in any breed I want as far as compatibility.. Just too Many Roosters can cause Havoc .. And Babe Chicks need to be protected from Larger Chickens until they can fend for themselves .. I Hope you will Truly Love your Flock as much as I Love mine ..

I ordered 3 buff orpingtons and 3 aracaunas today...they will arrive on May 11th! My kids are so excited.

Now, just have to build a coop. ;-)

Im from NH also and we just recently got chickens also they are 8 weeks old. We got Silver Laced Wyandottes, Barred Plymouth Rocks, White Plymouth Rocks, and Easter Eggers. All dual purpose, good egg layers,cold hardy, handle confinement well or good free rangers and friendly laid back personalities.
