I've been interested in having chickens for a while. Now that I have the yard to support them, I haven't stopped reading anything and everything I can get my hands on to learn about them. In everything I have read, Backyard Chickens has been, by far, the best resource. I'm so excited to get baby chicks in the spring and I hope to pick everyone's brain.

If your supplier offers "sexed" chicks that's the best way to get them. Otherwise they are sent "straight run," which is a cunning way of saying you'll get mainly cockerel chicks. Then you are faced with either rehoming the excess or eating them.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. :)
