Thought I'd swing by and introduce myself.

I'm in Northeast NJ, and my wife and I are preparing to get chickens! We've been debating it for a couple of years, but after going to the state fair last week, it's been decided.

We're in the process of looking at coop plans, and putting together a list of equipment we'll need so that hopefully we can start with chicks early spring of next year (or sooner with pullets if we manage to get everything ready quickly). We're planning on 3-4 hens at most, and looking at Araucanas, Plymouth Rocks, and Silkies. We won't be able to free range, as we live on a somewhat busy road, but we plan on building a run that will allow us to let them into a large fenced in garden area during the day.

On another note, we're also beekeepers, currently with eleven hives, and hoping to expand to about twenty next spring. We just bottled the last of our honey this year, so we finally have time to breathe and work on another project (chickens). The rest of our zoo consists of two big dogs (a lab mix and an English pointer mix), two cats, two guinea pigs, a saltwater fish tank and a small koi pond.

Well, that's about it. Looking forward to asking a bunch of newbie questions and chatting with all of you!

Here's a few shots of the current zoo:

Gunther, the fearless guinea pig.

Conor and Jack, our monster 1 year olds.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You have some interesting animals. Gunther is already one of my favorites. Connor looks like he needs to be prompted to curb his enthusiasm by way of his gizmo on collar.

Bee keeping is very, very popular among members.

Silkies are not considered good layers but, generally make very good broody hens, that like to sit/hatch out chicks.Other breeds tend to harass them because they are so docile and 'different looking.'

That was a very nice intro and I really enjoyed your pictures.

You are looking at some good breeds to start your intro to chickens. If you'd like some input from other members in NJ, check out your state thread:

Look forward to seeing you on the boards.

Thanks for joining us!

Thanks! Gunther is pretty cool. Alfred (the other pig) is cool too, but shy and hard to get a good picture of. The collar Conor has on isn't a behavior collar, it's the electric fence collar. They both have one, but Jack had outgrown his collar and we hadn't gotten him a new one in this picture.

The slikie is mostly due to the fact that my wife loves them. We're looking at a Polish as a possibility instead. (She likes the punk rock looking breeds.)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've never raised bees, but we are in the process of moving and purchasing a small farm in Montana and are seriously considering getting some bee hives so any tips you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks for posting the pics.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chickens.

The best tip I can give you about bees is to find a local group and hook up with a good mentor. It's invaluable to have someone that's experienced that you can call when you need a second set of eyes.
