Howdy Y'all!!

I'm not new. I got involved with the old BYC back in 2007, I think. But circumstances caused me to lose touch for awhile. My friend, Chickensioux, got me re-involved awhile back. But I just stuck with a couple of categories like "Emergencies" for the longest time. I just found this category tonight. So here goes:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We've had chickens for 10+ years. We got our first order from Murray McMurray in June 1999..... 32 Buff Orpingtons and one "Rare Exotic Chick". He was solid white and HUGE!! Never did figure out what kind he was.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We've got 37 hens and 11 roos. I LOVE roos!!!!

(3) What breeds do you have?

Most of ours are buff orpingtons or buff orpington crosses. We had a buff orpington rooster cross with a hen that was so dark green she looked black. Never knew what kind she was either. Their offspring were sex-links - the males were a creamy white with gray or green tails; the females were black and gold. Beautiful bunch.

Then we introduced a barred rock rooster. He crossed with everybody and that year ALL the babies were barred rocks, although some had smoky gray stripes.

This year we added Partridge Rocks (BEAUTIFUL BIRDS), Golden Laced Wyandottes, Buff Rocks, Buff Brahmas, Americanas (got my first green egg today!!), a Barred Cochin roo, a Blue Cochin Bantam roo (that's black), and supposedly a Red Star Sex Link roo. All the roo additions are accidents. We ordered PULLETS!! Oh! And I found an OEGB Bantam hen on the side of the road about a month ago.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

We had a chicken emergency. We searched the internet for info about chickens and the original BYC came up. Been hooked ever since.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I LOVE horses and horseback riding, swimming, hiking, sewing, needlework, reading, and writing.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Now it is just my DH and me at home. We take care of my 81-year-old mother who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Diabetes II. Her dimentia is severe, so taking care of her is a fulltime job.

We have 3 grown children (my stepchildren, but they came into my life when they were 3, 5, and 7. I helped to raise them, so I consider them mine. I EARNED my gray hair!) We also have 3 BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL grandchildren.

We have 85 creatures on our 8-acre farm - besides the chickens, we have muscovy ducks, turkeys, peacocks, guinea hens, 2 bobwhite quail, a golden pheasant, a New Zealand white rabbit, a blind Australian Shepherd, and 4 cats.

My DH is a woodworker. He makes cabinets, furniture, carvings, and turns beautiful bowls, vases, etc on the lathe. He does all the cooking too since I quit 2+ years ago. He decided cooking was better than starving.

We moved here to "live off the land". The plan was to eat the eggs and have the birds and rabbits for meat. Ha!! That lasted until they all got names. We still eat chicken, duck, turkey, and rabbit, but we buy it from the store.

I've rambled on long enough. Wonder if anyone will actually read all of this. I LOVE what I do. Can you tell??
