I wanted to say a quick hello from Raleigh, NC. We started raising chickens last October because I've always loved chickens and have collected tons of (fake) chickens for awhile. I met a man who kept backyard chickens and fell in love with the idea of having them myself. After convincing my husband, we built a coop and started with three youngins': an Americauna who turned out to be a mutt and lays brown eggs rather than the green or blue I had been hoping for, and two buff Brahmas. One Brahma turned out to be a rooster, so we sent him out to the country to live with a friend who raises chickens and can have roosters. In exchange we got an Iowa Blue and a Barred Rock. When the Brahma recently went broody in early June we got her some fertile Japanese-Old English Game Bantam eggs and she hatched out five. The chicks are now almost eight weeks old. Three are little mottled Roos and two are black and white hens. We're getting rid of the Roos as we're not supposed to have them in the city. But, we're keeping at least one of the girls. They're beautiful!
I recently started a blog about raising our backyard chickens because as I was searching for information on chickens and certain topics it was often frustrating to find the information I really needed. If anyone's interested here's a link: http://lovinchicknfarmin.blogspot.com/ Enjoy!
