Hi Y'all,
Over the holidays, I spent too much time on Craigslist. Somehow, I wound up with 4 young, Jersey Giant hens. I've never raised hens before, am clueless, but pretty excited about the whole thing. I've cobbled up a pile of stuff other people have thrown out, bought some stuff at Thrift stores and ready to jump right in.
My covenants and restrictions state that I can't raise livestock or poultry for commercial purposes and nuisance pets are prohibited. I only have one contiguous neighbor. I planned to talk to them before I got the hens, but I jumped a bit too soon. My thought is if I stick to hens only, I should be OK........Do you agree?
Originally, my wife wanted to building the coop, touching our home. The run would be visible to the neighbor in winter, about 30 yards from their home. BYC postings brought up points about flies, odors, vermin, etc. So, I think I'll build the coop about 30 yards away from my home. In this site, the neighbor's view of the coop and run will be blocked by my home. Both coop and run would be over 100 yards from their home. But will be against a wooded area that houses squirrel, raccoon, and opossum.
What d'ya think?
I have a plywood box, 8' wide, by 31" deep by 4 ' high. One side of the box is a compartment 14"wide, by 31" deep by 4 ' high. I plan to make 2 levels for the box interior. The larger area will have some roosts. I was thinking of building the nest box in the upper level of the smaller compartment, and making 2 nest boxes about 15" wide by 14" deep by 18" to 24" high.
I would LOVE to hear any recommendations and suggestions.
God Bless and thanks for all the teaching you've already provided me!!!!!

! Happy you joined the poultry keeping universe! I can advise you on some of your questions.
The squirrels won't bother you. I think Jersey Giants are too big to be bothered by opposums. Raccoons would be a problem, however.
The distance from your neighbor - 100 yards - will not be a problem, particularly with no rooster.
I think the accommodations you have might be on the small side - they have a large run and some free range opportunities??
Good luck to you!

Sounds great! You will enjoy them so much! Beware of chicken math though---I thought 6 was a "gracious plenty" a year ago, but 11 live at our house currently!

How big is your run? I know our girls like a lot of room. They aren't "cooped up" so to speak too often. We live on large acreage and they free-range every day except for when the weather is particularly nasty. Their run is large enough (10 square feet per bird with roosts and hay bales and such) to keep them comfy, though sometimes, they still get to hen-pecking one another. Cooped up without much room and they can get quite brutal! My advice to anyone just starting out is MORE ROOM---make twice is much as you think you need---it will pay off in the long run!

Also, as far as "odors" go, I am a firm believer that a well maintained run and coop won't be smelly. Even in the crazy humidity and heat of Alabama, my coop doesn't smell. Even friends who have birds remark on how tidy our set-up is. While a lot of it has to do with the fact that for about 5-6 hours every day, our girls free-range, I attribute it mostly to obsessive cleaning. Our coop is bedded with pine shavings with DE dusted over it. And poop boards under the roosts in the coop filled with PDZ changed ever week to week and a half. And our run is filled with sand and DE and I scoop it almost every day. I have a glorified kitty litter scoop that works wonders. I compost the poop and dirty bedding and PDZ in the yard clippings and kitchen scraps. I hate stinky things. This set-up works very well.

You are in the best place for information! Read as much as you can. Good luck with your ladies! And welcome to BYC!

Just curious, does RedSox indicate you're from Boston?
I am Boston born and bred. Moved out when I turned 25. Go Patriots!

Sorry - can't share your love for the Pats! The name redsoxs is an old username from an old email account - I kept it so it would be easy to remember. I do like the BoSox (since my Kansas City Royals haven't given me anything to cheer about for last 30 years!).
