Hi Y'all,
Over the holidays, I spent too much time on Craigslist. Somehow, I wound up with 4 young, Jersey Giant hens. I've never raised hens before, am clueless, but pretty excited about the whole thing. I've cobbled up a pile of stuff other people have thrown out, bought some stuff at Thrift stores and ready to jump right in.
My covenants and restrictions state that I can't raise livestock or poultry for commercial purposes and nuisance pets are prohibited. I only have one contiguous neighbor. I planned to talk to them before I got the hens, but I jumped a bit too soon. My thought is if I stick to hens only, I should be OK........Do you agree?
Originally, my wife wanted to building the coop, touching our home. The run would be visible to the neighbor in winter, about 30 yards from their home. BYC postings brought up points about flies, odors, vermin, etc. So, I think I'll build the coop about 30 yards away from my home. In this site, the neighbor's view of the coop and run will be blocked by my home. Both coop and run would be over 100 yards from their home. But will be against a wooded area that houses squirrel, raccoon, and opossum.
What d'ya think?
I have a plywood box, 8' wide, by 31" deep by 4 ' high. One side of the box is a compartment 14"wide, by 31" deep by 4 ' high. I plan to make 2 levels for the box interior. The larger area will have some roosts. I was thinking of building the nest box in the upper level of the smaller compartment, and making 2 nest boxes about 15" wide by 14" deep by 18" to 24" high.
I would LOVE to hear any recommendations and suggestions.
God Bless and thanks for all the teaching you've already provided me!!!!!
